Luiz Inácio 'Lula' da Silva

A Brazilian politician who was President of Brazil for 8 years. He experienced quite a turbulent childhood moving from his birthplace to São Paulo with his mother to meet his father, only to discover that his father had a family with another woman. His first wife died during childbirth in 1971. He was first imprisoned for one month during the 1970s for organizing strikes and other union activities whilst Brazil was under a military régime. His nickname 'Lula' was picked up in 1982 just before his political career started and his first standing for a position in the government of São Paulo. Not without controversy, he was accused of being involved in a couple of corruption scandals, which resulted in him going to prison on the 7th April 2018. He was released on 8 November 2019 due to a ruling making changes to when prisoners serve sentences before they have exhausted all of their appeals.
